Thanks for that explanation.  It's clear and understandable.

To get the Wiki up and running again, it was synched to a new/updated
Solaris zone, and started up.  This "fixed" whatever was wrong on the
old zone.

Under normal weekend load, there are rarely more than 2 or 3 processes
running at a time... and during the week... around 20.

Something was going really wrong on the old server.. not sure what yet.
 For now, I will monitor the the database processes (I'll keep an eye on
it over the weekend, and into Monday when the load picks up), and see if
it's back to normal.  If it is behaving properly, I'll leave the apache,
php and mySQL tweaks alone... if things look like it's going to go the
same way as Friday, then we can take action by tweaking the apache
settings, etc. (the info provided here by everyone who replied is a huge
help in understanding what's going on behind the scenes :-)  ).
