Take a look here:

It's pretty clear that we are getting a LOT of spammers creating new user accounts. Most are not posting anything to the Wiki (partly due to a Spam filter regex I added a while back).

Is it worth taking action on this? Or do we just let it slide for now? What action can we take or should we take?

I brought up the idea of adding a Captcha for new user registrations, but there was no real definitive answer or agreement on that one.

I remember some kind of add-on that checks new user names and blocks any that may be "questionable" - scans for certain keywords, but I can't locate it right now. If I do find it, I'll post back here with a link.

Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, comments on this?

Maybe this extension?
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TitleBlacklist
which has an option:
newaccountonly - forbid creation of matching usernames, but allow page creation This would only limit usernames based on a list of unacceptable words that we would have to create.

Maybe this could be used as part of a larger overall anti-spam solution which includes Capchas on new user account creation? Or.. something else?
