we are starting the preparations to move the OpenOffice.org main site
from the CEE framework to a new infrastructure. You may have heard of
Project Kenai which is the basis for kenai.com, odftoolkit.org and
netbeans.org.

We have a migration project at kenai.com that will help us to stay in
touch even if the old site is no longer available and the new one is not
yet ready. Feel free to join "ooo-migration" on kenai.com and subscribe
to the list there, work on issues, ...
So if you have a bit spare time over the holidays make yourself
familiar with Kenai ;-)

I'll send another heads-up as soon as we have a staging site ready.

This is great news! Could you please outline some of the advantages of
migrating to Kenai?

First of all I would be happy to have the current functionality on a
platform that scales well. Even better is to see a path where
improvements have a chance to be implemented.

For example, will server-side scripting be
available? Wikipedia says Kenai is built on "JRuby, Glassfish V2, and
MySQL databases" but from a quick look at the wiki, it suggests PHP
may also be available - this could be useful in improving the
one-click download functionality by figuring out the language from the
HTTP header and potentially relying less on JavaScript.

I'm not sure whether the use of Javascript is a real problem.
But I see your point. Today we found ways to run applications
implemented in scripting languages in the (services.)openoffice.org
domain. This is not a standard option of the new framework.
But we can discuss a tighter integration of scripting driven
applications as a second step.

Also, will we
be able to (in the future) have a unified login for wiki, forum, etc?

Yes, see http://kenai.com/projects/kenaiapis/pages/AuthAPI

I can only imagine that the migration is going to be a huge feat, so
I've signed up and will help where I am able. I hope this will be the
beginning of many great possibilities for the OOo website!

Great, I'm glad that you as well as others join the effort and continue the talk at discuss at ooo-migration.kenai com

Greetings
Stefan
