Refresh my memory, will you? (Total disk crash, here; reloading
/everything/.) When we determined that the RE extension is responsible
for the disruption of "Show preview before first edit", did anybody
file a bug on MW/Bugzilla?

I have the same memory problems :-) I remember there was a discussion
about it... I just tested several pages with the "show preview" option
on, and using the Rich Editor, and I didn't see any significant problems
in edit mode. The TOC templates are not really rendered correctly,
but... otherwise things look OK (the syntax of the template call is
correct... at least the ones I checked).

I'm trying to zero in on this. One problem I see is that with "first preview" checked, I'm seeing occasional strange "black-diamond question-mark" characters. But these go away if I change Ff's View > Character Encoding from UTF-8 to Western (ISO-8859-1).
Question: what encoding should be used with the wiki?

Edit the first section ("About OpenOffice.org Basic"), and look at the Note at the end. Funny character appears immediately after the VBA in the note. If you enable first preview, and UTF-8.
