So, I still have to run 1.3 with yahoo behind a proxy since that proxy rejects any SSL attempts to authenticate with yahoo in 1.4

Does a recent version of the official client (not web) work? If so, it is *plausible* that that protocol [for proxied connections] is documented and someone could add support in the prpl.

Why is it necessary to authenticate with SSL with yahoo?

The previous auth method was deprecated; the official client has not used it in a while AFAIK. Server support for it has been disappearing and is believed to completely disappear in mid-August.

Does libpurple support authenticating the same way 1.3 did?

No.
