We've run live campaigns at 40 MT messages per second, and that hardly got us above 0.02% system usage on the Solaris boxes we're running on. We have production servers with multiple instances running on them across ranges of ports and these hardly even get stretched.
So, I'm pretty sure that whatever you want to do with Kannel it will be able to perform signficantly well as you'll be throttled by the SMSC or SIM modem you use to send and receive the messages!
