It makes it much easier to quickly make a change across all branches; you just make the change on master and merge it to all other branches. If each branch diverges from the others you have to cherry pick, and often the cherry pick will not work cleanly (due to the changelog and EVR differing, if nothing else) and you'll have to reconcile it.
