I ended up just deleting my grubenv and creating a new one and then did an update that included a new kernel. No errors.
The only diference I can spot is perhaps on line endings? I "cat"ed both files and the one I modified had a newline (shell prompt started on a new line) and with the newly created one the shell prompt ended up on the back end of the #### padded line. Thanks, Richard
