with grub1 you edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to get some tweaks set permanently, or enter on the fly during bootup. with grub2, tested both chainloaded with grub1, and with yum erase grub. Though it found updated kernels', it never booted them unless "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" was run manually.
