On my laptop, I have four workspaces. One for email, one for Eclipse, one for my pile of browser windows, and one for other stuff. I also have a terminal with many tabs in each workspace. Other than the standard shortcuts for switching between workspaces (which I rarely use), I have mapped <Logo>[1-4] to directly switch between workspaces. I rarely need to go to the overview other than starting programs.
As an aside, when I first saw gnome-shell, I thought it would be horrible to use. But after a while of using it, finding gnome-tweak-tool, and installing a couple of extensions, I've been quite happy with it. I actually think it's more keyboard friendly than Gnome 2 was.
