I think for Fedora, the file ought to be in /etc/sysconfig.

Would you see something bad on that approach (please, take into account that
we would not stop supporting the old way, we just want to make future
configuration easier and straight-forward).

It would be nice to have the option of installing and running multiple versions in parallel, just as with the Debian packaging. Just saying. :-)
