For the reasons James pointed out, it's not easily solvable for the "find the best thing to do, quickly". Ad hoc works well for very small groups (<6) -- and in that case you want them all to be in the same channel... to be able to communicate! :-) It's for the "under a tree" scenario, no access points around. If there is a lot of interference, it means there are lots of APs.
