What kind of generic interface are you specifically interested into and

As far as I know, the existing backend should already let you connect to
a Cyrus IMAP server without problems.

Having IMAP backend support would not be sufficient to provide
full-transparent Outlook compatibility ... unless every data is stored
in IMAP and mapped accordingly.
Is it the approach you were referring to?
