A compromise could be have the forums cross post to/from the mailing list.

As this has been describe it confused me. I assumed/hoped that the tickets 
would be closed to new entry. Then tickets would be triaged in age order 
closing them as won't fix with a message to reopen on github if still desired. 
Eventually all tickets would be closed, but the content will remain online.
