As someone else pointed out, if you have all mirrors, you could explicitly reduce your redundancy by detaching one side of the mirror and then you could remove the remaining plain vdev. The issue with removing a mirror is that you might have the correct data on only one side of the mirror, in which case we would need to find it and copy it.
