Google maps is apparently UTM (which looks like a mess to transform) and there's no info on what that wikipedia map's projection is, which is wonderfully useless, otherwise it might be possible to stick it through a transform as you say. I doubt there's any easy way to detect what projection it is, though theoretically possible I suppose.
