Dear all (esp. Robin and Donovan),

Thanks for taking this discussion off-list to the ycombinator site. My two
penith is below which I think no one would disagree with.

If anyone wants to attend one of Richard Stallman's talks then there's one
arranged for Aberystwyth - 31 October, and Oxford - 4 November (full diary
here: http://www.fsf.org/events/rms-speeches.html). I think there is also one
in London on Thursday 3 November at CAST which is part of Goldsmiths College
(see www.castlondon.com) but it doesn't seem to be in Stallman's diary. Let me
know if you want more details.

Re. Richard Stallman, whatever you think of him personally, and indeed the very
detailed notes he distributes to people who are thinking of hosting one of his
talks then there's no doubting the value of his work - surely?

I would say that the GNU General Public License (GPL), which was his work as I
understand it, was an innovation - actually a tremendous innovation possibly on
a par with the invention of the transistor or integrated circuit. Don't forget
that when Linus Torvalds released his kernal, it was under the GPL. We don't
know what would have happened if Linus hadn't decided to do that. However, I
suspect that Linus Torvalds would be largely unknown and his kernal would be as
unused as other projects which stayed propriety i.e. not released under a Free
Software/ Open Source license. And of course, we all benefit from software
released under the GPL.

Best wishes

Andrew
