If the OSM data can be improved or added to, then people can be encouraged to
do that. If there is data that is unsuitable for putting into OSM for whatever
reason that might be, the source code can be used to create a separate non-OSM
mapit (as we do in the UK). And we will continue to make improvements for both
those purposes.

Indeed; it is an instance of mapit that is not using that particular bit of
functionality. We didn't want to make any decisions about the OSM data (e.g.
"all level 2s are countries") because that might well not be the case, and it
seems simpler to let the data stand on its own as what it is.

You can (theoretically) already do exactly that request, as you can with any
area in the system:
http://global.mapit.mysociety.org/area/13505/covers.html?type=O07
(show me everything that Canada covers of type O07). But note my recent comment
on https://github.com/mysociety/mapit/issues/16 saying this call is actually
very non-optimal and will currently time out. I can't say how much it could be
sped up, but that's certainly something that can be looked at (perhaps
precomputing all the results, for example).

Could be clearer, but there is, and it's in the same place in the documentation
that it is on the UK version. "The current area types are: O01 to O12." That
could be spelt out and link to the lists for each level, as the Norwegian
version does, feel free to add a ticket on github.
