I did exactly this to create a carpooling map for my kids' school. Parents are
asked for:
 • home postcode
 • offering lift/needing lift/both
 • how many kids and/or spare seats they have
 • any particular weekdays

And it all gets plotted on a Map Gadget, which I embedded in an otherwise blank
HTML page.

Maya, if you want to drop me a line, I can talk you through it.

On the other hand, CrowdMap.com does look to be a very good fit for what you
want, so you could just go with that.

Good luck with it!
