Google Refine will get you this point relatively easily, I think. http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2010/12/16/adding-geographical-information-to-a-spreadsheet-based-on-postcodes-google-refine-and-apis/ has an example tutorial on how to do it (please be sure to set a throttle delay of at least 1000 milliseconds). Then you can use openheatmap as you say (mapit still has the old ONS codes it uses, or name should hopefully be enough now there's only one Durham), or alternatively Google Fusion Tables also lets you draw coloured boundary maps too, probably a bit more complicated (you'd have to join a table like https://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?snapid=S6827015JQ0 with a table of your data results, I guess).
