Hmm, yes, perhaps... 

mm:formatter is not new, it is present in 1.6 already, as a part of the
'richttext' project, and will be a little bit more powerfull (as it will
e.g. deal with xslt's).

Perhaps moving the 'simple' escaping functionality to an attribute of
'Writer's might seem a good idea to me too. Then of course also the
mm:formatter itself would be a writer, so that also its output can be
'escaped' then easily as well.
