Btw, I think this kind of functionality in 1.7 can be put in an 'contenttype' tag, which can influence default escape behavior of contained writer-tags (perhaps an extension of 'locale' tag, which does something rather similar).
Problem is this restricts the functionality to the taglib only. As we still have quite a bit of SCAN pages this is no solution. It would also exclude all other applications/scripting which uses the MMCI.
It could perhaps be deligated to the bridge. So, just like cloud.setLocale exists, we could have cloud.setContentType?

Still no fix for SCAN then, but for that perhaps it is easiest to clean MMObjectBuilder and move this kind of stuff to a 'SCANMMObjectBuilder' or so, which you should use if you still use SCAN.
I think this could be a good solution for getting Scan as much out of the core as possible.
The other option is to rewrite SCAN to be based on the bridge....
