I know that some projects have given write access to their wiki's to "contributors". I've known "contributors" that have become "committers" thanks to their documentation contributions.
In the cases that I've known about, the "contributors" had an ICLA. And that seems like a good thing. The ICLA doesn't really seem "tedious", to me. Especially if you are going to be making multiple contributions over a period of time. If we're only talking about a few submissions, then a contribution is fine (via Jira or email).
