More flexbackup I/O errors

I have now used yet another tape drive.  An IDE Internal 8GB Hornet TR 4 drive.  It 
has the same issues as all of the other tape drives.  I am throwing my hands up and 
giving up.  I am now forced to use and learn 
taper.  What are the pros and cons to using taper?  Or, is there ANYTHING else that I 
can test/try to see why flexbackup is continuously failing.
