Success!  Everything went OK, but it took some jiggering around 
(removing/adding/swapping rpms).  But it works great now!

I would recommend to anyone else to configure the most bare'est, 
minimum'est install they can get (by editing their 'comps' file on the 
install floppy) and then just rpm -Uvh all the rpms from a e-smith cdrom.
