Firstly, wu-imap as used in the e-smith server and gateway does support
qmail's native maildir format (after it is suitably patched), and we use
the maildir format for mailboxes.
Courier-imap did not exist until September 1999, well after the e-smith
server was already shipping with wu-imap including maildir support.
We have been aware of Courier-imap all this time, but have yet to see any
compelling reason to change.
We would also probably be less reluctant to change if the curiously named
mrsam did not have such a penchant for re-inventing the wheel. A better
IMAP daemon is one thing, an IMAP daemon bundled with a new and different
TCP server daemon, a new and different package of authentication modules
and new and different IP access control mechanism is something else again.
