No, I stand corrected. There was no IMAP in 3.x.
However ....
There was already imap support in a patch to e-smith 3.x which I released
in October 1999 (e-smith-3.04p1-1), which was deployed in the field (in
East Timor - see http://www.caa.org.au/groups/IT/dili) shortly thereafter.
At that time I'd had extensive experience with wu-imap, and may not have
heard of Courier-IMAP.
The work on imap support had started in July, 1999, well before
Courier-IMAP was released:
[charlieb@vegemite html]$ rpm -qivp imap-4.5-3mdir2.i386.rpm
Name : imap Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 4.5 Vendor: (none)
Release : 3mdir2 Build Date: Fri 23 Jul 1999 12:51:52 AM EDT
Install date: (not installed) Build Host: charlieb.sw.oz.au
...
So the meat of the answer is still perfectly valid - e-smith imap support
was developed before Courier-IMAP was available, and we have yet to see
compelling reasons to change. We are ready to seriously consider making
the change when we see those reasons. If we do change, we are likely to
use the Courier-IMAP daemon with as little extra baggage as possible.
