Okay, I found that all my mail - 56 plus messages - is backed up in the /var/spool/smtpd/spool directory. I can view them with Midnight Commander, but they are not being delivered locally...
Still searching. It seems someone responded to my post in the general users forum, but said they had no idea of a fix and could not find anything on google either...
