Changing the MTA is actually irrelevant here - this _could_ be done with
qmail, Exim, Postfix and sendmail (and pretty much any other modern MTA
people might care to look at). 

The issue is also not just with virtual domains. The server is designed
to host a single user community with a single set of user rights across
the services - web, Samba, AppleTalk, etc.

There are HOWTOs on handling mapping of individual users out from
virtual domains. Dealing with multiple user communities is a completely
different world.
