maybe this could be stated on freenetproject.org's download page?
e.g.

NIO requires at least a java version 1.4 environment
latest freenet version without NIO for netbsd and other platforms where 1.4 is not 
available: 5xxx [link to the tar from snapshots]
latest freenet version with NIO for current jvms available for linux, windows and 
other platforms: 5xxx [some link?]
latest freenet unstable version, requires NIO: 6xxx [some link?]

and some links to different java distributions such as java.sun, ibm, kaffee, 
blackdown, netbsd-somewhat with comments on NIO compatibility
