Keep in mind that most clients encode it to 7 or 6 bits down from 8.
That adds substantial overhead. A small 100kb file could bloat to
135kb, including MIME overhead.

For comparitive purposes, most e-mails are under 5kb, which means
your single attachment has placed a load equivalent to 27 e-mails
onto the remote client. This is more than what the freenet list
generates in about 1.5 days, on average. 

The other problem is that due to how a mailing list operates, that
same file will be replicated approximately 200 times to the
other subscribers (for this list). Your 100kb file has now consumed 
~250KB of bandwidth, probably more due to overhead.

*this* is why files should *never* be sent to mailing lists
which are on the internet.
