I see no usefulness in being able to arbitrarily place the date portion of
the key anywhere in the string. The purpose of the date portion is to
allow for date-based versioning of keys.

This is achieved fully by putting the date on the end. Being able to place
the date arbitrarily is flexibility that complicates things without
serving any actual purpose.
