I have been persuaded by your eloquent arguments that even the experts
may like smaller boxes sometimes :). But is it such a big deal to
implement three different detail level modes just for the single-bar
interface? I doubt it's much code.

So, we will have the following interfaces:
Bar (minimal) - no distinction between never tried and about to be
 retried
Bar (detailed) - shades of orange (or whatever) between yellow (new
block, not tried) and red (given up)
Detailed - something like Bombe's design, without the log and
 block-detail panes
Very Detailed - Bombe's original design, with the log and block-detail
panes as IFRAMEs or real frames

Is this to everyone's satisfaction?
