How common is 64-bit Vista? Currently we install a 32-bit JVM, which works, but
doesn't get auto-updated, and is somewhat slower than if we'd installed a
64-bit one (assuming we fix the FEC libraries and manage to build them for
Windows). We can't install a 64-bit JVM, because the free version of the Java
Service Wrapper (which we use for self-restarting the node when deploying
updates, and for detecting hangs) only supports 32-bit.

Options?

[01:54:08] <toad_> does freenet work? :)
[01:55:22] <Keiya> Not right now
[01:55:35] <toad_> hmmm?
[01:55:39] <toad_> what is the problem?
[01:55:43] <Keiya> It's shut down while I upgrade the Java install it uses
because it's too stupid to be able to launch the x64 version
[01:55:47] <toad_> ah okay
[01:55:57] <toad_> yeah, the wrapper has some issues with 64-bit java :|
[01:56:18] <Keiya> AND I can't use the autoupdate
[01:56:23] <Keiya> Because it sees the 64-bit one
[01:56:23] <toad_> why not?
[01:56:26] <toad_> ah
[01:56:27] <toad_> doh!
[01:56:31] <Keiya> And is "You're up to date!"
[01:57:10] <toad_> well, win64 is quite a rare platform, and it would be hard
to make it work with the 64-bit jvm, because the 64-bit wrapper version is
payware :|
[01:57:22] <toad_> oddly it does work on *nix with 64-bit jvm's
[01:57:29] <Keiya> Isn't this the sort of crap that Java is supposed to avoid?
>_>
[01:57:38] <toad_> :|
[01:58:23] <Keiya> Also, Win64 is 'rare'?
[01:58:26] <Keiya> Every laptop
[01:58:38] <Keiya> Every laptop I looked at before buying this one /ships/ with
it
[01:59:04] <TheSeeker> Vista 64 is pretty common.
[01:59:21] <toad_> well ... vista has enough compatibility problems on its own,
maybe the mfg's do think 64-bit won't greatly reduce the already miniscule
number of apps and hardware compatible with it :|
[01:59:31] <Keiya> Um.
[01:59:38] <Keiya> What are you smoking?
[01:59:44] <toad_> MORE GAMES RUN ON LINUX THAN ON VISTA
[01:59:54] <Keiya> I've had... /zero/ problems with Vista compatability.
[01:59:55] <Keiya> Well.
[01:59:57] <Keiya> OK
[02:00:04] <Keiya> *ONE* problem.
[02:00:06] <toad_> anyway, it's a problem we have to deal with somehow ... and
I can't think of a good solution :(
[02:00:15] <Keiya> For a game that was written to run on Windows 3.0
[02:00:34] <toad_> Keiya: right, most of the games that run on linux but not
vista are oldish
[02:01:06] <toad_> and many laptops are made for the corporate market anyway
[02:01:21] <toad_> anyway i shouldn't pick a fight on that, it's off topic ...
[02:01:25] <toad_> i'm sorry
[02:01:50] * toad_ will try to investigate whether there is a solution
[02:01:59] <toad_> i'm betting there isn't an easy solution though :|
[02:02:12] <Keiya> Gah... I can't even find a download for 6_16 32-bit?
[02:02:21] <toad_> there isn't a 6_16
[02:02:24] <toad_> there's a 6_15
[02:02:57] <toad_> we use java service wrapper:
http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/download.jsp
[02:03:11] <toad_> unfortunately the 64-bit windows version is commercial-only
[02:03:22] <toad_> not having any per-copy revenue there is no way we can do
that
[02:03:45] <toad_> of course, the main reason we use it is so the node can
restart itself when doing an auto-update
[02:04:02] <toad_> there are other solutions for that i guess ...
