I'm trying to use dhclient with FreeBSD 2.2.8-RELEASE, and am having some
problems.
I've downloaded isc-dhcp V2.0b1pl18 from the ISC ftp server, and done a
"make install".
Everything went fine - no errors. I get the right version info when I run
dhclient.
I've got two network cards in the computer, an SMC card (ed0) and a 3c509
(ep0). I have
ep0 set to my private network (192.168.100.1) and am planning on connecting
ed0 to
a cable-modem. The ISP (Shaw @Home) uses DHCP to assign the IP address,
subnet
mask, gateway, domain, nameservers, and hostname.
I've run dhclient as follows:
#dhclient -d ed0
and it gives the following output:
Listening on BPF/ed0/00:00:c0:ce:2f:4e
Sending on BPF/ed0/00:00:c0:ce:2f:4e
Sending on Socket/fallback/fallback-net
DHCPDISCOVER on ed0 tp 255:255:255:255 port 67 interval 29
DHCPDISCOVER on ed0 tp 255:255:255:255 port 67 interval 31
No DHCPOFFERS received
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping
When the DHCPDISCOVER messages are displayed, I can see the
Transmit and Receive lights on the cable modem flash but nothing
seems to get to dhclient.
I've used the dhclient-script that was supplied with pl18, and have tried
both
an empty dhclient.conf file and the one from
http://home.san.rr.com/freebsd/dhcp.html (just to try something else).
I believe that the network card works since I can configure it
manually and ping another machine via a crossover cable.
I believe that Shaw@Home's DHCP server works because
a) it works for the W98 machine that are currently using the service, and
b) Wide-DHCP running on the FBSD machine is able to get an IP address.
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong, or any troubleshooting
I can try?
Any help would be appreciated,
Jeff Yeo
