Thanks for the good suggestions from Ted Lemon and Steve Nygard.

I've made the suggested changes, but still no luck.

This is now my /etc/dhclient.conf file:
---
# dhclient.conf
send dhcp-client-identifier 01:00:00:c0:ce:2f:4e;
send host-name "C5904336-A";
interface "ed0" {
        request subnet-mask, routers, domain-name-servers,
            domain-name;
}
script "/etc/dhclient-script";
---

One thing I wondered about was the identifier: the "01:" in
front of the MAC address. Is that correct?

Can't run W98 on the BSD machine - I've only got 340MB of disk
space on tap!! However, we've tried to bring a different W98
machine up (through a hub while the first W98 machine was
still connected) and DHCP worked for it without setting a specific
host name in W98 #2. This seems to indicate that the provider
isn't being too restrictive (which does surprise me somewhat).

Short of throwing a network sniffer into the mix (which I am
considering), any other thoughts?

This is a lot tougher than under NT, where all I have to do is
click on a radio button and reboot! Not a flame, just a wistful
comment. I should add that I've not (yet) had to get NT DHCP
working with a non-Microsoft DHCP server.

If my mailing-list-reply technique is poor, please let me know.

Jeff
