I don't think so. Usually you don't define one kind of alignment but use
the one you need when arranging objects in your diagram. And the reason to
have buttons is to do it quickly, without the need to drop out the menus.
I don't know about visio but hardy had this set of buttons in their
toolbar.
Another way would be to have a special dialog for alignment and related
object functions.

Yes. I have still doubts on how this should work. Click the button and
click the diagram, or just click the button (that won't remain pushed) and
the last edited diagram would be aligned.
BTW I have seen that the last commits adds gnome code to dia. Will be this
optional or eventually dia will depend on gnome libraries?
