AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE error with code from CVS

Hi,

I'm trying to build dia out of CVS, but I get this error when I run
autogen:

  creating cache ./config.cache
  ./configure: line 531: syntax error near unexpected token   `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(dia,'
  ./configure: line 531: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(dia, 0.83)'
  Now type 'make' to compile dia.

I am running Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (frozen), and here is info for some
relevant packages:

  autoconf       2.13-20
  automake       1.4-6
  libtool        1.3.3-6
  gettext        0.10.35-13
  gettext-base   0.10.35-13

uname -a:

  Linux frobozz 2.2.13 #8 Fri Jan 14 07:49:08 EST 2000 i586 unknown
