It's not quite 'one direction only', it's in fact 'only
horizontally/vertically'.  So if you move far right, it moves only
horizontally, if you move far up, it moves only vertically.  This leads to
a small jump if you move across the original position.  The alternative
would be to fix either horizontal or vertical based on the first movement.
I think that would be worse, since if you accidentally start off in the
wrong direction, you're stuck with it.  Any of the UI knowledgeable out
there can comment on this?
