Text tool And UML Uses Case

When I attempt to use the Text tool in Dia, only a very small amount of the
text is visible - the width of the text "shape" doesn't seem to grow as fast
as the amount of text I type in - the same is true of the UML "Note" shape
and the UML "Use Case" oval - the shape stays very small, even as the text
scrolls out of view, beyond the boundaries of the shape. What's the deal?
I'm using Dia v0.86 on Debian Linux.
