We went through and evaluated about 8 systems last year. It all depends on
what you are doing, how much money you have and how flexible you need it to
be.

We looked at:

The big boys are: Blackboard and WebCT.
The upcoming systems include: Desire2Learn
Open Source systems include: Moodle, Sakai, Manhattan Virtual Classroom
ASP services include: eCollege
Our own home grown system.

We ended up choosing Desire2Learn for our consortium.

Here is a good article that you should read:

Does anyone have any tips for using a Content Management System (CMS) for a
school website?

PS166 currently has a website at ps166.org as do many of the other schools
in the district.

I think that use of a CMS such as Mambo might provide incredible power to
designated parents and teachers to put up their own content and take the
load of a central web admin.

Web hosting plans with free CMSs are now commonly available for as little as
$5/month.
