Using `--gc-sections` requires each function and data item to
be
placed into its own section (-fdata-sections and
-ffunction-sections
in gcc). AFAIK dmd does not do it.

Well, it definitely _can_ support it, but we should ask Iain if
it actually supports it :) Gonna try and experiment with it a bit.
