The problem I've had with MacPorts is that a bunch of ports are just broken (meld, for instance). I've had a lot more success getting apps I pick to actually run when obtained via Homebrew.
As for OS... I used to target Solaris. Linux isn't perfect, but at least it isn't that pile of junk.
