As someone else in the thread alluded to, people don't care about the nuance, and it's not particularly important. Linking is part of the compilation process that people have to wait for before their program can run. So if linking is slow, then compilation is slow.

you can dramatically decrease linking times by switching from libphobos2.a to libphobos2.so.
