Which is possible because the messages are sorted linearly in the computer! When you do a newnews command in NNTP, you tell it a time, not a thread. Then it grabs everything since that time, and you know they are new. Hmmm.... that's an idea though. If it plopped down a "last checked" time cookie or url param, it could bold the new things on the web too.
