it could only compile the Haskell code to C and then invoked GCC afaik.

Nothing, just trivia.

Many compiler implementors use a target language instead of pure native
code generation to spare effort developing a proper compiler backend.

Current GHC versions compile directly to native code, even though you
can still use the old C code generation backend.
