I Believe that your are very correct in that being one of the major problems with newbies (and some oldbies as well). Peronally, I have checked my own soundcards and find that I must set them around 1000 HZ, as if I get up as high as 1500cy, they no longer work with full output. I did a test with min, clicking every 100 cy from one end to the other of the waterfall, and there is a very decided drop-off at each end. Find where they drop off occurs at each end of the waterfall , then choose a location somewhere in the middle between those marks, and you will be good to go.
