All: Problem solved!!
I did a loopback test with WinDRM, running two rigs and two computers. It turns out that it was the 3.5mm MONO jack that connects the sound card audio output to the rig. I switched to a stereo jack and the noise vanished! It took a few hours to find, but the hiss is now gone! Anyone for 40 meters? It's 03:25Z (Tuesday, October 11).
