Thank you all who responded to me with concrete ideas and practical results to report about laptops vs netbooks. Looks like the laptop wins hands down. I'm really ready to get a newer laptop. Although this venerable old, old, IBM ThinkPad 380ED served me well for 8 years, it is time to move on. Many newer programs will not run on this old machine. Amazing longevity, though considering I bought it used, refurbished in January 2002!
