I'm using XDirectFB in gentoo myself and beside getting DirectFB to work, the only thing I had to was to create a .xdfbrc in my home with WINDOW_MANAGER=enlightenment gnome-session Without the WINDOW_MANAGER part it would start gnome with metacity which I didn't like very much.
